Lost Space
Author: admin

Anyone heard the rumour a man got lost in space?
Heard a Russian was lost on a space mission.
This must be the worst way to die.
Actually 3 Russian cosmonauts were killed in space in 1971 during Soyuz 11 after undocking from the space station Salyut 1. Those are the only 3 deaths in SPACE, but no one has got “lost”.

Skylab / Apollo Space Station $3995 Skylab was launched 14 May 1973 by a Saturn INT-21 (a two-stage version of the Saturn V launch vehicle) into a 235 nautical mile orbit. The launch is sometimes referred to as Skylab 1, or SL-1. Severe damage was sustained during launch, including the loss of the station’s micrometeoroid shield/sun shade and one of its main solar panels. Debris from the lost micrometeoroid shield further complicated matters by pinning the remaining solar panel to the side of the station, preventing its deployment and thus leaving the station with a huge power deficit. The station underwent extensive repair during a spacewalk by the first crew, which launched on 25 May 1973 (the SL-2 mission) atop a Saturn IB. Two additional missions followed on 28 July 1973 (SL-3) and 16 November 1973 (SL-4) with stay times of 28, 59, and 84 days, respectively. The last Skylab crew returned to Earth on 8 February 1974. Features: Scale – 1/48 Length – 36″ Width – 28″ Please allow 3 to 6 months from the time of order to delivery, as these models are custom made upon ordering. Space Shuttle ‘End of Program lapel Pin’ 1981 – 2011 $4.25 Space Shuttle ‘End of Program lapel Pin’ 1981 – 2011 This Enamel Lapel Pin commemorates the 30 year Space Shuttle Program. This design was the winning submission in a contest. The contest, which closed to submissions last December, was conceived by space shuttle program manager John Shannon and his technical assistant Debbie Byerly as an “uplifting” activity for workers as the program entered its final year. This winning design is by Blake Dumesnil, who chose a diamond-shape for his patch to suggest how the shuttle has been “an innovative, iconic gem in the history of American spaceflight,” its facets fanning out to “evoke the vastness of space and our aim to explore it, as the shuttle has done successfully for decades.”The central element of his design, the space shuttle itself, is bounded by panels depicting the American flag and two sets of stars: 14 in memory of the astronauts lost aboard Challenger and Columbia, and five symbolizing the shuttle fleet including Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour. The patch’s jewel-shape is cradled by the outline of a blue circle, symbolizing the orbiter’s realm in low Earth orbit but also alluding “to the smoothness of the shuttle orbiting the earth,” according to the caption Dumesnil provided for the contest. Magic School Bus: Lost In The Solar System $5.95 From the best-selling Scholastic series, this paperback follows the adventures of the Magic School Bus as it turns into a space shuttle and explores the solar system. 40 pages. From School Library Journal The planetarium is closed for repairs, so the Magic School Bus blasts off on a real tour of the solar system. After their previous field trips, the children in Ms. Frizzle’s class are all blase about such things; as they land on the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and fly by the other planets and the Sun, they comment on what they see, generate a blizzard of one- or two-sentence reports on special topics and–even while Ms. Frizzle is left behind in the asteroid belt–crack terrible jokes (“Could Saturn take a bath? Yes, but it might leave a ring!”). Although some of the information is radically simplified–people are said to float in space because “without a large mass nearby . . . they do not have weight”–Cole keeps the narrative specific without burdening it with loads of facts. Degen’s fresh, energetic illustrations complement the breathless pace perfectly. A first-class introduction to the planets, fine for pleasure or purpose reading. –John Peters, New York Public Library Reading level: Ages 4-8 Paperback: 40 pages Publisher: Scholastic Press (February 1, 1992) Language: English |
